Hey Guys... my name is Sarah and welcome to my website. This website was started by my mom as a way to help spread awareness about a bone condition known as Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
I was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta and since being diagnosed, I have struggled with numerous fractures and at times limited mobility. Other people with OI, like me, deal with fracturing bones, chronic pain, hospitalization, surgery and many other health issues including decreased mobility.
As a child, fractures would not stop me from experiencing new things and having fun! Now that I am older, nothing has changed, every day is an adventure. I have learned to keep my chin up, keep smiling and live each day to its fullest. I keep myself busy by helping others, I have learned that doing for others helps me forget about the challenge of having OI (Osteogenesis Imperfecta).
I have many interests and they include watching auto racing and following the Indy Car Series, Grand Am Series and just recently Nascar. I have only met one current Nascar driver and that was Jimmie Johnson. In July 2011, I was able to travel to Atlanta and then on the way home mom and I stopped in Charlotte. We visited a few of the race shops around our hotel. I had a great time getting to know a little bit more about the history of Nascar. With the help of my parents, I travel the country, attending racing events and talking to drivers in many series.
My goal for the future is to attend college and then pursue a career in auto racing as a Public Relations Manager, Marketing Manager or Personal Assistant.
Having O.I. does not stop me from living my life, but of course, I am always aware that a fracture could occur at any time. I use common sense in regard to safety while staying active.
Having to be in my wheelchair at the race track is necessary but does not make me happy. Sometimes people will ask me why they will see me "in" and "out" of my wheelchair during race weekends. I explain it like this... I have fractured my back (compression fractures) many times and walking long distances on harder surfaces can lead to new fractures. Many of the race tracks have surfaces made of concrete or asphalt which are very hard for me to walk on because of the possibility of vertebral fractures.
At home I can stay out of my chair unless I have a new fracture. Most people my age do not understand my condition and can be quite rude and mean when I am out at places like the mall. This is the reason I enjoy being at the track because I have found that people who are in the racing industry are so much more accepting of the wheelchair.
I have always been interested in auto racing and have dreamt of being a professional driver myself. Since I know that being a driver is impossible for me, I live my need for speed through the drivers.
I hope that while visiting this website you learn more about me and Osteogenesis Imperfecta! Visit the website often to read updates on where I have traveled to and who I have met while educating people about OI. Be sure to look for those people who are wearing that cute blue OI awareness bracelet!
